Mehmed promises that wherever she is and whatever difficulties she faces, he will stand between her and danger. Their conversation also turns toward Konstantinos and what the Byzantine ruler told Mara during her captivity.
Mara’s assessment of Konstantinos is particularly interesting. She believes that the new enemy is more cunning and more difficult to understand than Yanos. He does not appear to abandon his principles, which makes his methods even more dangerous. According to Mara, the enemy is attempting to destroy Mehmed from within rather than simply confronting him openly.
However, when the subject of Hala Sultan arises, Mehmed firmly stops the discussion. He makes it clear that he does not want further disturbance in his Harem, creating another layer of tension around the people closest to him.
Constantinople Prepares for the Next Battle
Meanwhile, Konstantinos understands that Mehmed’s next moves will be far more dangerous. After the humiliation surrounding Mara, the Byzantine ruler knows that Mehmed will return with soldiers and cannonballs.
The Byzantine side begins preparing its defenses. Konstantinos wants to make sure that his walls and soldiers are strong enough to withstand another Ottoman assault. At the same time, Catholic forces begin arriving to strengthen Constantinople’s defenses. At the same time, an investigation reveals that the orphanage Hala Sultan claimed existed in Bursa cannot be found. Instead of immediately exposing her, the decision is made to secretly watch her and gather more evidence.
The tension becomes even stronger when Candarli’s past connection to Hizir Celebi is explored. Cavit learns about an old incident involving Hizir Celebi, hoping to discover a weakness that could be used against him.
